Supporting Family Transitions

When families move too, the relocation experience becomes more complex and challenging. Parents want to provide the best experience for their children, but it is not always easy to know how best to cope with their different reactions and needs. This package provides four hours with a relocation coach. The coach will explain the process of change, transition and culture shock and help the family to make sense of their own experience. They will offer practical advice for helping children and teens settle into their new educational and home environments and help the family identify strategies for building new routines and settling happily into their new life abroad.

Intended for

Families making international moves with children and/or teens.

What you get

Four one-hour sessions, materials and support in the following areas:

• An overview of the culture shock and transition process and how this can impact personal and family well being – including how the experience may differ for different age groups
• The factors that contribute to family well being and strategies to help family members support their own and other family members well being
• Opportunities for family members to share their experience in terms of what is working well for them and what is not, including a reflection on the educational and social experience.
• A discussion of different family members needs for support and ideas/suggestions for fulfilling those needs with input from the coach when appropriate
• Exercises and resources for family members to access/use in between sessions

All family members are invited to join the sessions though the ability and willingness of children and teens to participate may vary depending on their age
